Prey 2017

After Resident Evil VII: Biohazard I got thinking about the graphics. I wanted to play a game with better ones so I Googled Best games of 2017 and that’s how I met with this pearl. The graphics are truly amazing! The weapon details, the landscape everything is looking as it should be. There were some other interesting games there, but no spoilers for the future posts. 🙂

The year is 2032 and you are Dr Yu a scientist. The game starts at your home. You can explore it entirely, check your emails throw your stuff around etc. You have high-tech assistance everything is neat and clean I got the feeling that nothing can go wrong this what I need after the Resident Evil horrors. Then you take a helicopter for a little sightseeing just to feel the game engine killing your Ps4 while delivering eye watering scenery to your mind.

The most part of the story is at Talos 1 space station. One of the rooms tells the history of Transtar. It is like a museum with relics of the past and gives you a great background of the story. You go to a laboratory where they put you through some tests. I really liked that part because you can get the hang of the controls in an exciting environment so even the tutorial is fun to play to the point where there is a damn coffee mug that almost gave me a heart attack!

I won’t go into what happens after that, but keep in mind that the game has 3 totally different endings and they depend of your interactions with the game. I didn’t try all of them, ( i usually go evil) but watched the YouTube videos. The game was long, but I could write the main story to a page. The first part of the game could have used some more npcs. It was a bit lonely walking down the halls with the mimics and no human contact at all so no conversations. Even the corpses where not enough so I felt isolated, but if I think about it is on purpose so the player can dive in the atmosphere.

You enemies comes from the Typhon race. There are mimics and greater mimics that can camouflage themself to look like an ordinary item. I just had to copy the game description for them: ” Mimic working mechanism dimensional state where time passes more slowly shifting back with the appropriate stimulus (e.g. prey)”  When exposed they look like an inky octopus. 🙂

Next comes the infected personnel that also look like the mimic, but bigger.  As you progress with the game you meet with phantoms, telepaths and other tidbits, that have different abilities, but my usual problem with the games nowadays remain. Every enemy looks like the same. The game didn’t have any bosses to fight with you just fight with these octopus like creatures and corrupted machinery.

The weapons are awesome! You standard weapon is a wrench. It has more soul than a knife.  If you use it with the gloo cannon you can destroy nearly anything that the game throws at you.

The gloo cannon spits a cement like foam. It can immobilize, extinguish flames, stop electronic discharges, and when hardened it becomes climable. It is far the most useful weapon in the whole game. I really enjoyed that there weren’t the usual machine gun rocket launcher weapons that most games have.

You can carry, repair, and even create turrets like the eradicator turret. They are your deadly allies. A few placed to a door where there are enemies at the other side could really make a difference.

Of course there are grenades like the nullwave transmitter. If you don’t even play the game please watch a video of it in action. I dropped my jaw. It bends the whole space around it. I though that it will tear a whole in the space-time continuum. 🙂

There is also the weapon huntress bolster. It is a toy, but sometimes it can be useful like when you try to sneak past enemies or shoot at buttons that are unreachable. Of course you can upgrade your weapons to carry more ammo or do more damage and if you don’t need one or already have it you can dismantle it for the spare parts for crafting.

Before I get to crafting I just have to write a few words about the psychoscope. It is like goggles you can mark and scan the nearby enemies with it. It reminded me of pitch black 2. It looks much like the scanners in that movie. You can upgrade it various ways and the graphics how it lock in to targets are superb.

You can dismantle almost anything in the game with recyclers and the corpses give you some spare parts as well. If you get the necropsy skill you can even harvest the aliens organs for spare parts. Recyclers convert your junk into materials and fabricators turn materials into usable items. You can watch as your new item forms.

Besides the ones that I already mentioned there were some other stuff that made this game truly exceptional. While progressing the game you acquire skills that makes you more like the mimics than human. You can even polymorph into small things like them to slip through the cracks. There were times when I began to wonder if I am at the right path or I slipped through somewhere where even the creators didn’t think of.

There are emails about a rpg game and you can even find the room where the workers played it with the character sheets and dungeon master stuff. I love rpgs so this brought back some great memories from my childhood. In this game the quest is fatal fortress and there is an ogre’s keep.

There are several it tasks in the game. You need to hack into computers and locks similar to lock picking in Skyrim. You need to install drivers and restore servers there are quite a lot to do with computers. I felt like Mr Robot. 🙂

Resident Evil VII: Biohazard

I watched all the resident evil movies including the cartoons so I thought here is the time to try this game out. The fear of the walking dead, z nation and the walking dead series are also at a break so let’s have some fun with zombies Milla Jovovich style. After a few minutes of playing the summer heated air turned to deadly cold breeze. There isn’t any connection to the movies at all. There is an umbrella corporation helicopter, but that is it and this shit is scary! You should play this game at high volume and in a darkened room to set the mood. I played it in the living room full lights and low volume, but it still made me scream sometimes. I noticed while playing horror games ( I tried F.E.A.R in the past) they have similar  structures. First I shit my pants and after a few hours you develop a resistance or something, because at the end where I battle with the last boss I only feel the action not the horror. There are DLC to the game that you should also try out. I only watched them on YouTube, but they make the story whole.

It starts with your being the girl and tells the story of how the family becomes insane. Your mother starts spitting bugs your father cuts himself and you just try to survive. Then you are the husband (or maybe boyfriend) who got a letter from the wife saying that she is in trouble and you should help her. Shes in trouble is a huge understatement. 🙂 You set off to a journey to an old wrecked house and things get ugly from there pretty fast. There are two endings for the game both should be tried out, because they are quite different.

Most of the story is played at the haunted house I often thought that this must be the biggest house in America. There is an attic, a basement, hidden tunnel system,  huge yard with a trailer etc. I loved that I am at the same place, but it doesn’t get boring, because I can discover every inch of it. Near the end of the game you go to a boat, but that is the only real trip in it and it is just fine like this.

I recently started watching the texas chainsaw massacre movies I am already at the third one and this game sure looks like the second one to me. Your wife father Jack is the same as the old dude who won the chili contest at the second one ( can’t remember the name). He is far the scariest character in the game with his evil laugh. You try to flee from him through really closed spaces and when he rages he starts to run to you. When I first encountered him I almost gave up on the game saying I am too old for this shit. You meet with the son too playing a friendly game of finger blackjacks. Every time you lose, you lose a finger. He makes a device just for that bless his heart. That part reminded me of the saw movies. When you meet with cute Mia ( your wife) he just pushes a knife through her own hand and then a few minutes later cuts of yours with a chainsaw!Only tha Japanese are so sick that they invent a game like this.

Clues puzzles and items

The clues in the game are rich of fantasy. There are “hidden” doors almost everywhere, and you must play with shadows to unlock some. You can also collect coins and tapes so you can get saved games. A lot of imaginations were implemented in these to not be boring, but they messed it up a little from my perspective. Ok there are really different clues all over the place but they are just laying over there in plain sight and the solution is force-fed to you. There are lots of games where I had to watch videos for the puzzles, because I couldn’t figure them out, well not this one apparently. If you found a spider in a room you are sure to find a picture of it as well so you can play with its shadow. The other thing that annoyed me a bit is the carrying capacity. I tried to progress with the storyline, but I had to get back for my stupid chest every time so I can rearrange the items I want to carry with me. The best item on the whole game is a smart watch that measures the distance from the boss. It just a gadget not so useful, but adds a great deal to the excitement. Also there are notes. It isn’t necessary to read them all, but they make the storyline whole. You can find item pieces for crafting and the healing animation is so funny. I’m dying from blood loss, I try to not to lose my guts on the floor then I pour liquid over my hand and done. Iam good as new.

The game has acceptable graphics, but I am really looking forward to the future where the people are realistic. They look like cartoon figures and that can ruin some of the mood. The fire and the shadows are good, but not impressive. By the way a horror game shouldn’t be played for the graphics I know, but one can hope. 🙂 You can play this game on Pc, Xbox, and Ps as well so whichever you have you aren’t left out.

Remembering Heroes III + Horn of the Abyss

This is going to be a short post, but I must let you know what I found recently. I was drinking with my buddies in the weekend. An interesting topic came up. Who have played heroes 3 in the old ages. I grew up on it, besides baldurs gate, heroes was my most favorite game in the world for decades. I played all version except for Heroes of Might and Magic VII, but that is also on my to-do list. One of my friends thought that he was a pro playing it and we started to bring up memories.

Strategy tips

Maps sizes: Different map sizes require different tactics. At a small map for example if you play with dungeon, with a bit of luck you can rush everything down in 2 weeks. How? If you play by yourself on impossible difficulty you choose a starting hero like Arlach. He has a ballista which is a huge advantage at the start. Now comes the trick. You have to restart the scenario until the tavern has Shakti. He is the one with the trogolytes. Now you have trogolytes: arlach (30-40)+ shakti (30-40+30-40+30-40)+ town building 14(or maybe 7 I don’t remember) so you could own up to 174 trogolytes+ a ballista at the second day.(you need money, but small maps has some in the vicinity of the town. They rip apart everything. On bigger maps you definitely need a hero with logistics skill or a skill of the overpowered ones. For necropolis it is Thant with the animate dead. You can play with it so you don’t lose a single one of your creatures the whole game! For the other towns there are a few with armorer skill as special starting skill like Neela or Mephala. After you reach several levels you slowly becoming almost indestructible with it. As for magic try to reach for earth magic, because once you get town portal at an expert level you shouldn’t lose. There are tons of great strategies, but the best part of it to create your own.

Horn of the Abyss

When I got home I got heroes 3 again and find out that it has an unofficial expansion. Most of the times I hate mods and anything that is not official. They are buggy and kill the gaming experience etc. but this was a great exception. You can download it for free. They added tons of new stuff to the game. New music, new monsters, a new town with its own creatures called the cove. It is a pirate themed town and I enjoyed trying it out a lot. I didn’t want to play again with heroes 3, because I did everything in it the good old days, but this way I got a new experience with brand new maps and a plot that I just had to share it with you. So if you loved this game you should give it a try for a few days for the retro feeling.

Middle earth Shadow of Mordor

I know that it isn’t a new game but when I choose Middle earth shadow of war I saw that it has a predecessor and I loved the lord of the rings movies even the Hobbit so I had no choice, but to try this as well for the story. 🙂

You start at a peaceful place training with your son and BAM you’re in the middle of mordor fighting some orks. The storyline hit me so fast and got serious that I didn’t really manage to know what the hell was going on. You and a wraith are attached and you search for your memories together to fill out the missing pieces from your pasts like a puzzle. There is an 32 piece ithildin symbol that you can collect and it forms a door. Don’t do it… It doesn’t do anything. I know if I love the lore I enjoy it and the voice actor is awesome, but damn they could have at least give a little buff to something. There are several flashbacks and some of them really give you the goosebumps. I really loved the authentic style lots of occasions you and the npcs speak elven or orkish. After you start the game there you are with countless of options, there are artifacts, missions, collectibles and whole bunch of stuff so I tried to clear areas one by one. The most annoying thing is that if you are on a mission and get too far away in the heat of battle you die instantly. It was so irritating at first that I almost gave up on the game. On the one side it’s great that there are a bunch of side quests where you can get upgrades and runes and stuff, but on the other it messed a bit with the story on my perspective. Pretty soon I met with Gollam and I was overjoyed because he is one of the main reasons I started playing this game. After several free the slaves quests ( every slave looks basically the same) I totally forgot what happened to him. There was another funny dude called ratbag. He is an ork who helps you, but to tell you the truth somewhere along the way he is vanished too. There is also dwarf hunter ( a dwarf who hunts not a hunter who hunts dwarves) that you have several quests together. I thought that the storyline is going to be quite short, because of the quick beginning, but man I was wrong. It is great and worth playing. I don’t want to spoiler anything but they did a cliffhanger at the end so I have to play with shadow of war as soon as I finished this article.

Since you are a half wraith and a half ranger you have abilities from both sides. I wanted to max out just the wraith side, because that is for ranged attacks and supernatural talents like heat vision and domination so I liked it better at first, but you can’t. The domination becomes a critical part of the gameplay, because after some time you can dominate almost anything. You have to spend points for both of your ability tree to unlock the better ones. Your character has 3 weapons. A sword a dagger which is a sword, but you broke it and a bow. When you kill enemies they drop runes. You can use them to upgrade the weapons. When you have a bunch of runes on them they look so awesome. Of course there is headshot with the arrow, but you can also pin enemies with it. It is a pretty useful tool when an enemy with intel that you need is running away from you. While playing the game your character becomes a killing machine. There are executions and brutalize with tons of blood. I didn’t expect so detailed finishing moves and so much thought in every slash, throw, cutting, gutting from a 2014 game. The choreography of the combat is exceptional and I think that is the main reason that so many players got hooked on this game. When I flee while jumping over enemies behind me a cloud of flying tomahawks and poison spears can really get the blood boiling. I used to play Ryse son of Rome on my Xbox it had similar graphics, with good combat, but middle earth combat system tops it.

Over 80% of the time I was at grassy places assaulting walls or wooden buildings. I had hoped that there will be dozens of mines and hills, but not. There was a vulcan with next generation ashes falling from it at the end, but the scenery didn’t take away my breath. Interacting with it is another thing.  There are bee hives that you can disturb to attack the enemy, there are barrels that explode, you can eat every damn mushroom and root for health, and there are fireplaces that can also explode causing massive fire damage to the living at their vicinity. These assets can really turn the tide when you are in a combat. It gives you the option to make great strategies not just hack and slash and hoping for the best.

How should I start this. This was a great disappointment for me while I have to admit that this game has one of the most thought out enemy systems that I have ever played before. I start with the bad side. I am the frigging middle earth where should be dragons, demons, ents, spiders, trolls, and a whole bunch of other monsters and there isn’t any. I only fought with ghuls, orks and uruks, sometimes caragors and maybe 3 grugs. Somebody tell me why?! I really hope that the next one will be different in this. If I set this aside the orks and uruks are extensive. The enemy have a nemezis ranking tree. They got footsoldiers captains, warchiefs. When an enemy kills you it gets promoted and they power also raised. They have names and memories so when you encounter one more than once he remembers your previous one and talk to you accordingly. With the domination skill it is awesome as you infiltrate their ranks one by one and climb their political ladder. They also have their unique faces and skills that make them different enemies, but in my eyes they are all orks with the same size and same number of hands and claws. You need to gather intel from enemies to know those skills because it can be quite disturbing when you start to shoot one in the middle of a group and after they noticed you realize that it has an immunity to ranged weapons. Next to the ranking system they have classes too like Berserkers, shielded ones, and ranged types. When you don’t interact with them the time doesn’t stops. So every enemy is doing their own tasks everywhere. There are turf wars and such and everyone is looking for power. If you see an enemy more than once there is a possibility that he received a higher rank since you last saw him. This what makes me forget the bad side that I mentioned earlier. Oh and the most important part. When you aren’t strong enough not just attack everything you see because those nasty ork fuckers like to call for reinforcements in populated areas and you get overwhelmed quite soon. I learned this the hard way.

There are four type of quests. The bow quests, the dagger quests, the sword quests, and the outcast quests. They involve free the slaves, stealth, ranged practice and the usual quests that these kind of games have. I have to highlight the defeat the warrior horde and the bridge crossing missions. They were far the best for me. The bridge crossing is a tower defense type when the horde is coming and you have to defend something. Great massacres there.. One of the defeat the horde missions there was a bonus objective to gain a 100 hit combo!! My average hits were around 12 at that time so you can imagine my war cry while knee-deep carving and slicing the scum.

I feel I left out a whole bunch of stuff and haven’t explained so many things but I could write a book about it and that itself says a lot about the game. I’m looking forward to write about the next one (shadow of war) and I will try to include some of the stuff that has been left out from here. CRAP SHADOW OF WAR IS ONLY AT A PRE-ORDER STATUS!  At least I give a link for it too.

Update! Here is the link for the Shadow of War: Middle earth Shadow of War
