After Resident Evil VII: Biohazard I got thinking about the graphics. I wanted to play a game with better ones so I Googled Best games of 2017 and that’s how I met with this pearl. The graphics are truly amazing! The weapon details, the landscape everything is looking as it should be. There were some other interesting games there, but no spoilers for the future posts. 🙂
The year is 2032 and you are Dr Yu a scientist. The game starts at your home. You can explore it entirely, check your emails throw your stuff around etc. You have high-tech assistance everything is neat and clean I got the feeling that nothing can go wrong this what I need after the Resident Evil horrors. Then you take a helicopter for a little sightseeing just to feel the game engine killing your Ps4 while delivering eye watering scenery to your mind.
The most part of the story is at Talos 1 space station. One of the rooms tells the history of Transtar. It is like a museum with relics of the past and gives you a great background of the story. You go to a laboratory where they put you through some tests. I really liked that part because you can get the hang of the controls in an exciting environment so even the tutorial is fun to play to the point where there is a damn coffee mug that almost gave me a heart attack!
I won’t go into what happens after that, but keep in mind that the game has 3 totally different endings and they depend of your interactions with the game. I didn’t try all of them, ( i usually go evil) but watched the YouTube videos. The game was long, but I could write the main story to a page. The first part of the game could have used some more npcs. It was a bit lonely walking down the halls with the mimics and no human contact at all so no conversations. Even the corpses where not enough so I felt isolated, but if I think about it is on purpose so the player can dive in the atmosphere.
You enemies comes from the Typhon race. There are mimics and greater mimics that can camouflage themself to look like an ordinary item. I just had to copy the game description for them: ” Mimic working mechanism dimensional state where time passes more slowly shifting back with the appropriate stimulus (e.g. prey)” When exposed they look like an inky octopus. 🙂
Next comes the infected personnel that also look like the mimic, but bigger. As you progress with the game you meet with phantoms, telepaths and other tidbits, that have different abilities, but my usual problem with the games nowadays remain. Every enemy looks like the same. The game didn’t have any bosses to fight with you just fight with these octopus like creatures and corrupted machinery.
The weapons are awesome! You standard weapon is a wrench. It has more soul than a knife. If you use it with the gloo cannon you can destroy nearly anything that the game throws at you.
The gloo cannon spits a cement like foam. It can immobilize, extinguish flames, stop electronic discharges, and when hardened it becomes climable. It is far the most useful weapon in the whole game. I really enjoyed that there weren’t the usual machine gun rocket launcher weapons that most games have.
You can carry, repair, and even create turrets like the eradicator turret. They are your deadly allies. A few placed to a door where there are enemies at the other side could really make a difference.
Of course there are grenades like the nullwave transmitter. If you don’t even play the game please watch a video of it in action. I dropped my jaw. It bends the whole space around it. I though that it will tear a whole in the space-time continuum. 🙂
There is also the weapon huntress bolster. It is a toy, but sometimes it can be useful like when you try to sneak past enemies or shoot at buttons that are unreachable. Of course you can upgrade your weapons to carry more ammo or do more damage and if you don’t need one or already have it you can dismantle it for the spare parts for crafting.
Before I get to crafting I just have to write a few words about the psychoscope. It is like goggles you can mark and scan the nearby enemies with it. It reminded me of pitch black 2. It looks much like the scanners in that movie. You can upgrade it various ways and the graphics how it lock in to targets are superb.
You can dismantle almost anything in the game with recyclers and the corpses give you some spare parts as well. If you get the necropsy skill you can even harvest the aliens organs for spare parts. Recyclers convert your junk into materials and fabricators turn materials into usable items. You can watch as your new item forms.
Besides the ones that I already mentioned there were some other stuff that made this game truly exceptional. While progressing the game you acquire skills that makes you more like the mimics than human. You can even polymorph into small things like them to slip through the cracks. There were times when I began to wonder if I am at the right path or I slipped through somewhere where even the creators didn’t think of.
There are emails about a rpg game and you can even find the room where the workers played it with the character sheets and dungeon master stuff. I love rpgs so this brought back some great memories from my childhood. In this game the quest is fatal fortress and there is an ogre’s keep.
There are several it tasks in the game. You need to hack into computers and locks similar to lock picking in Skyrim. You need to install drivers and restore servers there are quite a lot to do with computers. I felt like Mr Robot. 🙂
