This diamond was also one of the best games in 2017 so I had to try it. It is an action role playing game and a sequel of a 2010 game called Nier. Sadly I didn’t know that when I started playing otherwise played with that first. I restrained myself from looking into the game before playing it so I started it without knowing anything about it.(except for the fact that it got voted for one of the best games)
At first it was a retro shooting arcade game. I piloted a ship and fired at hostile enemies. I thought that alright it is kind of cool, but give me a break, this should be one of the best games of the year? Even the map in the corner of the screen was a dual colored simple map(not so easy to navigate). Then something happened. It looked like an old game, but the graphics of the explosions were superb and the whole game looked a bit weird. The camera view switches between angles and at first it was a bit confusing for me. Not knowing who I was, what was my mission what am I doing there just added to that. Later from that pit of confusion curiosity emerged and I began enjoying it.
You are a part of Yorha forces the last and ultimate weapon for the humanity to get back earth from the alien invaders. Each of you is an android with a black box inside that gives them power. The rest of the human race try to survive on moon. Your hero is called 2b, and later in the game you have also two other heroes 9s and a2. Each of them have their own stories that are entangled with the other two. No matter which character you control the experience and the weapons remain so it helps you keep your connection to the game. You are in an open world game, the first weapon is a Katana and you get a sidekick robot with machine guns. Besides dealing with enemies your robot helps you when you jump from a great height and catches you so you don’t sustain damage except when it ignores you and you fall. Your weapon when it is not in use just floating behind you. Usually that would bother me a lot, but this game somehow managed to give you that retro atmosphere that can’t be ruined with some minor details like this. The best part of the story that it is almost never ending. First I get to the part where the credits are I said cool it was great kinda short, but a great game. Then the game kept going. After the credits the story continues. When I got to the 4th credits scene I weren’t even surprised anymore that It is still going. It is so long, but not boring for even a second that you can’t imagine. If you have a good speed run for it with all the endings done just leave it here in the comment section I would be happy to watch it.
The first bigger enemy was a huge robot with digging claws. My jaws dropped when I looked it. Now that is what I am talking about. I thought that it was part of the map, I literally ran on him for minutes before it moved. There are tons of enemies in the game. Sometimes you have to fight with your own kind, other stuff with huge robots. I just mention some of the best ones. First the singing maiden. A robot who signs and want to look pretty. Japan is part of the making of this game so of course you get a Goliath versus Goliath battle. 🙂 There are two more huge robots that I loved. A shark submarine thingy that transforms into an octopus and Hegel the giant worm in the desert. Cute. There are Adam and Eve(the fight is in a Tornado! ). While fighting them it became clear to me what is the only thing that this game lacks. It is blood! Because everyone is a robot, or android or something similar there is no one who can bleed. They could at least bled oil or something. This reminds me. A robot trying to revive it’s brother with oil almost broke my heart. 🙁
Hacking and Minigames
You get the hacking availability. It is a mini game within the game. Sometimes they try to hack you and you can even get computer virus too that messes up your system slowly degrading your moving capabilities and you sensors too. There are so much other mini games in it. It is like Grand Theft Auto in this perspective. I helped a lost machine that missed his mom, There is father servo the training robot. There is a speed championship that I gave up. It is impossible to beat or I did something wrong. :d There are mini logical games like when you help a resistance member with the boxes at storage.
Music and Sounds
Music and sounds are part of the soul of this game. The music reminded me of the anime series ghost in the shell. There are a few characters that have voice actors and the conversations are mostly in writing, but it is the best this way. There is no sound to interrupt the flow of the music. There were times when I just stopped playing the game and listen to the music. In the machine village there was a place when I stared at my monitor and it felt like watching a painting and in other times the game becomes black and white. If there are art films then I have to call this game an art game.
Best Places and the Heart of the Game
When you find the machine village there is a machine amusement park with a roller coaster ride. It looks so amazing with all the fireworks and stuff. The other coolest place was a white city. Every pixel of the city was totally white. I thought that I was in an apple exhibition.
If you thought that this game is about killing and shooting stuff you are so mistaken. It is about life, death an reincarnation. All the game pushes philosophical questions even your bots are evolving and arguing about it. That is definitely why I am going to play with it again and that is why that it is really the best game of the year on its genre. If it has a genre. There isn’t a game remotely similar out there or at least I haven’t really found it yet.
