Heroes of Might and Magic VII

First let me tell you about a story of the reasons I hate Ubisoft. I first encountered them with Heroes 6. I played at one of my friends house and it looked like the first decent Heroes after heroes 3, but it had lots of bugs. I said no problem I will patch it then. You can’ t get the latest patch you have to patch it for all of the previous ones first. After I made like 7 patches it froze and I had to start all over again. I browsed it and found a forum where they explained if you have an Nvidia card that happens. -.- OK. I iced it and after the heroes 6 gold edition came out with dlcs. I gave it a go. I mean if the released dlcs for it then it must be perfect now. NOT! They solved some of the bugs, but a few remained I can’t remember which, but one of them killed the game for me. They released a note that no more patches are coming and screw you guys. We are in the 21st century how do these things still happen? I swore that no more Ubisoft for me. And here I am buying heroes of might and magic VII. First I watched some YouTube trailers and it wind me up. Buying a Cdkey for this game instead of buying the DVD is highly recommended, because you don’t have to patch it then which is still a nuisance (but thankfully I don’t know). The other thing that I have heard that buying the game from directly Ubisoft costs more than buying the CD from a store. That is outrageous. When you buy it directly they don’t have to create a DVD, they don’t have to ship it, there isn’t a vendor that puts his own profit to the price and they still asks for more money. Stick to buying keys guys.

The Game

It basically follows the right path that they take while creating Heroes VI. The animations are better, I haven’t come across with bugs and they bought back the more different resource types for buildings. Nearly all of the issues from the previous ones were addressed. You can have caravans again, one of the best ideas ever. It makes generating bigger armies easier and you don’t have to hire heroes just for that cause that makes longer games boring. Everyone can have the town portal skill, but it only teleport you to the nearest town so building one huge army with town portal skill no longer ensures you of the certain victory.  There are lots of other facilitation that they have implemented. You can see which armies are likely to join you and in the combat phase the damage multipliers when you don’t attack from the front and it always show the damage of the spells that you use. So if there are any modifiers that reduces the damage you can see them before you cast it. The skills and abilities are also changed, I love that you can get master class from only three of them depending of the hero you use. It helps to make the heroes  more different. There is also a duel mode if you don’t want to collect resources just jump in to the combat.

I only played with the campaign mode and to be honest I haven’t really finished it yet. I just did the Haven, the Dungeon with the dark elves and started the Sylvian, but I thought you deserve a post and I can’t keep you waiting. The campaign so far has some interesting maps. Not just the usual little story and you basically have to do the same strategy for each one. The dungeon campaign had some nice conspiracies. Sadly the biggest flaw of the Heroes since the previous one remained. There aren’t any cinematic. None. You read dialogues and sometimes watch an army of the enemy, but remember when in at the start of Heroes V had the devil vs hero fight? It was over 10 years ago and still looks awesome. So you don’t need the latest most expensive stuff. Just some short movies to get you going when you finish a map. That is the ultimate treasure for a gamer to see these stuff not just access a dialogue. I hope that in Heroes VIII Ubisoft or hopefully some other firm recognizes this or hopefully in the campaigns that I haven’t done there will be some.

There is the necropolis faction for the undead of course. There is the Haven for the angels. The barbarians have the stronghold. The academy is for the mage. The Sylvian for the elves, dungeon for the dark elves and fortress for the Dwarves, but it is a dlc. Which one is missing? Yes you guessed right. They took out demons and devils. Who authorized this folly? Playing the true evil was one of the best thing in heroes. Angel vs devil, dragon vs titan. That was the whole concept since the dawn of time. Eh screw it, at least you can get several units from inferno as neutral from the maps. My cousin said that there was a vote between players if dark elves or devils should stay, but I can’t confirm it.

Nier Automata

This diamond was also one of the best games in 2017 so I had to try it. It is an action role playing game and a sequel of a 2010 game called Nier. Sadly I didn’t know that when I started playing otherwise played with that first. I restrained myself from looking into the game before playing it so I started it without knowing anything about it.(except for the fact that it got voted for one of the best games)

The Beginning

At first it was a retro shooting arcade game. I piloted a ship and fired at hostile enemies. I thought that alright it is kind of cool, but give me a break, this should be one of the best games of the year? Even the map in the corner of the screen was a dual colored simple map(not so easy to navigate). Then something happened. It looked like an old game, but the graphics of the explosions were superb and the whole game looked a bit weird. The camera view switches between angles and at first it was a bit confusing for me. Not knowing who I was, what was my mission what am I doing there just added to that. Later from that pit of confusion curiosity emerged and I began enjoying it.

You are a part of Yorha forces the last and ultimate weapon for the humanity to get back earth from the alien invaders. Each of you is an android with a black box inside that gives them power. The rest of the human race try to survive on moon. Your hero is called 2b, and later in the game you have also two other heroes 9s and a2. Each of them have their own stories that are entangled with the other two. No matter which character you control the experience and the weapons remain so it helps you keep your connection to the game. You are in an open world game, the first weapon is a Katana and you get a sidekick robot with machine guns. Besides dealing with enemies your robot helps you when you jump from a great height and catches you so you don’t sustain damage except when it ignores you and you fall.  Your weapon when it is not in use just floating behind you. Usually that would bother me a lot, but this game somehow managed to give you that retro atmosphere that can’t be ruined with some minor details like this.  The best part of the story that it is almost never ending. First I get to the part where the credits are I said cool it was great kinda short, but a great game. Then the game kept going. After the credits the story continues. When I got to the 4th credits scene I weren’t even surprised anymore that It is still going. It is so long, but not boring for even a second that you can’t imagine. If you have a good speed run for it with all the endings done just leave it here in the comment section I would be happy to watch it.

The first bigger enemy was a huge robot with digging claws. My jaws dropped when I looked it.  Now that is what I am talking about. I thought that it was part of the map, I literally ran on him for minutes before it moved. There are tons of enemies in the game. Sometimes you have to fight with your own kind, other stuff with huge robots. I just mention some of the best ones. First the singing maiden. A robot who signs and want to look pretty. Japan is part of the making of this game so of course you get a Goliath versus Goliath battle. 🙂 There are two more huge robots that I loved. A shark submarine thingy that transforms into an octopus and Hegel the giant worm in the desert. Cute.  There are Adam and Eve(the fight is in a Tornado! ). While fighting them it became clear to me what is the only thing that this game lacks. It is blood! Because everyone is a robot, or android or something similar there is no one who can bleed. They could at least bled oil or something. This reminds me. A robot trying to revive it’s brother with oil almost broke my heart. 🙁

Hacking and Minigames

You get the hacking availability. It is a mini game within the game. Sometimes they try to hack you and you can even get computer virus too that messes up your system slowly degrading your moving capabilities and you sensors too. There are so much other mini games in it. It is like Grand Theft Auto in this perspective. I helped a lost machine that missed his mom, There is father servo the training robot. There is a speed championship that I gave up. It is impossible to beat or I did something wrong. :d There are mini logical games like when you help a resistance member with the boxes at storage.

Music and Sounds

Music and sounds are part of the soul of this game. The music reminded me of the anime series ghost in the shell. There are a few characters that have voice actors and the conversations are mostly in writing, but it is the best this way. There is no sound to interrupt the flow of the music.  There were times when I just stopped playing the game and listen to the music. In the machine village there was a place when I stared at my monitor and it felt like watching a painting and in other times the game becomes black and white. If there are art films then I have to call this game an art game.

Best Places and the Heart of the Game

When you find the machine village there is a machine amusement park with a roller coaster ride. It looks so amazing with all the fireworks and stuff. The other coolest place was a white city. Every pixel of the city was totally white. I thought that I was in an apple exhibition.

If you thought that this game is about killing and shooting stuff you are so mistaken. It is about life, death an reincarnation. All the game pushes philosophical questions even your bots are evolving and arguing about it. That is definitely why I am going to play with it again and that is why that it is really the best game of the year on its genre. If it has a genre. There isn’t a game remotely similar out there or at least I haven’t really found it yet.

Mortal Kombat X

I used to play with Mortal Kombat 2-3-4 and I wondered where the series headed. Well it has certainly evolved. There is a long story mode with some twists, the graphics are amazing and they managed to add so much extras while maintaining the Mortal Kombat feeling so I think it is the best one. Lets start with the characters.

You have 33 characters total. All of the characters have three different types each one is a slight bit different. They have their own unique skills and each have a different finisher. That is 99 different character in total to play with. One of the best games for local multiplayer when you only have one Pc or Consol to play with. Nether Realm studios really went they way out with experimenting with new ones. I only write about the new ones that were the most exciting for me. First there is alien and predator from the alien versus predator. Then there is leather face from the Texas Chainsaw series. There is Jason from the Friday 13th series. It looks like NetherRealm connected the fighting games with horror movies. There must be an overlap in the audiences. I’d like Freddy Krueger from nightmare from Elm street better but I read that he was in Mortal Kombat 9 so I should try that one too. One of my favorite new characters was Bo Rai Cho. He is a big fat drunk who vomits and farts. We all have at least one friend who acts like him. There are some children of the characters from the old times, but I won’t get into them, because we haven’t really clicked. There is D’vorah an insect being with great narration. Ferra & Torr is the last one I want to mention. He is a huge tank with a tiny rider. They live in symbiosis. Oh there is one more thing with one of the characters. They basically gutted Goro. On the previous episodes of the game he was the ultimate enemy. I both feared him and admired him. Now he is just one of the fools. He doesn’t get half the damage, doesn’t have the impenetrable skin he is just a big lump that can be easily defeated. The stomp skill remained, but doesn’t do as much damage like in the past.

When you start the fight there are some lines exchanged between the characters. It is different for every one of them. There are 14 different arenas where you can fight. Each one has their own unique items in the background that you can use during your match. Everyone who ever came contact Mortal Kombat knows that the heart of the game is the fatalities. It seems like the creators know this as well. Buckle up kids and get your gore hunger satisfied, because every character has 2 fatalities plus a stage fatality plus 6 brutalities. Brutalities are like some of your moves that you can use in battle, but if you use them as a finishing move it rips the enemy apart. The only sad thing is that while you are in story mode you almost never get to do a fatality on anyone. You still want more bone breaking and stuff? No problem there are the x-ray moves that does heavy damage and comes with a different animation for all the characters. You can see as the enemy skull shatters. It is so awesome and can be a real game changer when you are in a pinch.

The Krypt

The Krypt main purpose is that there you can unlock skills, fatalities, costumes etc, but they made it so much more. There are random enemies popping up there to give you a heart attack, chests with boosts and you have to solve puzzles to unlock new areas of the Krypt. It makes unlocking so much better than doing it at a shop.

Fighting modes

There is the story mode. You get to try out almost all of the characters as the story progress and it has a nice story, but I can’t highlight any of it, because it wasn’t so exciting for me. There are the good old towers from the old game, but they also included living towers that change as time passes.  There is the single fight if you haven’t got so much time to play and of course the practice mode if you want to learn how to do a certain combo. I left the best for last. Test you luck mode. You get random advantages and disadvantages and you must improvise. Sometimes the arena tilts other times there are air strikes trying to kill you while playing. When you play with your friend and your skills are better then his this can really balance the odds or mess them up completely. 🙂

Mass Effect 1-3 Nephew Edition

My nephew sometimes visit me and we talk about games. He is becoming a true nerd and I am proud of him. He is 12 years old now and the enthusiasm how he talks about his games really puts a smile on my face. I wanted to make an interview with him, but I only asked what is his favorite game and he started talking about it for at least 20 minutes. I only asked a few questions when I felt that I got totally lost.( I will use Italic when asking the questions) Children brain functions differently than ours so I think it is awesome to experience a game from their perspective. It is really chaotic so I only recommend reading it for those who have already played the games. Nevertheless the usual useful links are at the bottom of the page if you want to buy them. So without any formatting here is our discussion about his favorite game:

Why did you like these games?

My father used to play with it. Shepard is the hero. In mass effect one Shepard appeared. He became a spectre. It means special tactics and recon sys. They are people who are allowed to kill in a mission. His job is working instead of the council. The council are Salarian, Asari and Turian. These are the three main species in the milky way, but later mankind also became a main species.  In the first mass effect book you can learn much more about the characters. There is a Savering, a spaceship that isn’t really a spaceship, but a synthetic life form and Saren climbs into it. They talk with the spaceship to keep alive all the organic lifeforms. For 50 thousand years the Saverings species try to annihilate all organic life in the milky way, but Savering is the spaceship name and the race is reaper. Savering takes over control of Saren, but Saren doesn’t know it. Taking control called Indoctomation. At the end of the first game after Savering took control of Saren he returns as a robot. This is the end of the first part.

Team Members

Now lets talk about the team members. There is Garus Vakarian who is a Turian that worked at the Citadel. Savering wants to destroy it. He wanted to call there the other reapers. You meet Ashley Williams in your first mission. She is fighting against the get on Eden Prime when you meet. The Get are robots that a race called Qarian created, but this race took vengeance against its creator. This is why the get want to kill their makers who went to them and wanted to change sides to the reapers. There is also Kaiden Elenko who also follows you to your first mission, but doesn’t happen much with him. There comes a point where you have to choose which one of your followers gets sacrificed. Ashley Williams or Kaiden Elenko. On Weremien a heavier conversation takes place with Uldron Rex who is a Krogan, because there you find a Krogan antidote for Genofage. Genofage is a virus that makes Krogan impossible to be born. They found the cure for it, but it was a trap so lots more Krogan could be switched to Saren side. You must try to convince Rex that this is a trap, but for that to happen you must collect enough renegate points that you gain by being lawful or evil. Lawful choice is when you try not to kill lots of people. At mass effect 3 you can even choose rex as a teammate. Taly is one of my favorite helper besides Garus. Tari is a Galerian who you meet after fighting with a mercenary called Fist. She can be romanced if you are a man. The mercenaries try to take her away when you save her and asks her what this was. Sarin wanted her to take out her speech. What is it I know to interrogate. 🙂 Not in a friendly way. She comes with you on every quest and becomes a really good friend. Wait I write this down, because his name is hard: Liara T,Soni an Asari. Please delete that I write this down. Stop it! Ok I will definitely delete this part before posting. You meet her at Feros which is a planet. Liara is a scientist who researches a race called protan that extinct 50 thousand years ago because of the reapers. Although she is a researcher she can fight too.

Mass Effect 2

Now comes mass effect two story.  At the beginning of mass effect 2 you start to play with Shepard, but he dies.  An unknown race lasers Normandy. This race was a legend in the terminus system, but many believed they were only made up by the council to keep everyone there. Shepard joins the Cerberus that is a company who doesn’t like aliens. Shepard doesn’t like this. His leader is the elusive man. He asks Shepard to help him beat the collectors.

Team Members

These are the teammates. Thane, ark angel, a.k.a. Garus who we know from the first game. Kasuni, Zaeed, Grunt who elusive man didn’t count with, because Okir was the first choice for the team, but he died while trying to save Krogan. Samara, Tali, Miranda and Jacob. They don’t need to be asked for help they are with you from the beginning of the game. Mordin(at this point I asked him to stop with the names, but he just had to check the internet for a picture to remember the rest of them) Jack and Legion who is a Get that didn’t help the reapers. All of the Get is controlled by an artificial intelligence. These were the teammates that you have to do Loyalty missions.(there are some others that I won’t mention)

In the story you collect all of your helpers, but down the road you can do separate missions like shadow broker where you help Liara catch Shadow broker from the first game. He kidnapped one of Liara’s friend because she helped Cerberus revive you. There is also the overlord dlc. In the dlc. you must face a rouge artificial intelligence who is a man with autism and you help him escape from the nightmare that the Cerberus made. You send him to Grisomm academy. There are other smaller dlc.-s too. You meet with Ashley Williams and Kaiden Elenko on a planet where they started to kidnap people from a colony.

That is the end of the second game?

No of course not there is still much more. There is a mission, but it would take two long to describe all of it, but in the end they were prothean. At the end of the story you go to the collectors base and you defeat the collectors with the upgrades you installed to your ship. Your ship is the second version of the normand. You get to the base and choose some people who are good in all kinds of stuff. You rescue the team that worked in the spaceship. The reapers were the ones who changed the proteans to collectors. Harbringer was the reaper who who controlled all the collectors. You fight with a human reaper who the collectors worked on so they could create from a bunch of people they kidnapped from the collective and you get the option to give lots of reaper data to the elusive man or not. I forgot to tell you that in this mission lot of your teammates can die even the ones who were with you from the first game. When you defeat the human reaper you gain knowledge that the reapers are heading to your way and you have to stop them. In the end there is a dlc. in which you can stop the reaper arrival by detonating a mass relay, but you don’t stop them just slow them down. From here comes the third game.

Mass Effect 3

The reapers are here and they started to destroy the planet. Shepard doesn’t work for Cerberus anymore, but he is with the alliance again. The Cerberus is your enemy in this game and they want to kill you. They try to collect reaper technology for elusive man to control reapers. You can get a prothean helper if you go to Eden prime where it all started and you find out a bunch of things about the prothean and the reaper. There is a dlc. there about the reaper origins. They were also an organic life form in the beginning, but they changed themselves to robots. There is also the citadel dlc. where you fight with your evil clone that chronos made and you need some body parts from it. You meet with your usual helpers, but there is also James Vega and a prothean helper called Javik. You manage to help the council on their planets.

At the end there is the ending where everyone was angry except me. You must choose from three different choices. You can share your DNA with all the world and everyone will be happy. There will be peace between organic and robot life. The other choice is what the elusive man wanted, you control the reapers. The third option is what the alliance and captain Anderson who is your friend from the previous games wanted. Here you kill all the synthetic life and maybe you get to live at the end. In the other endings you die. I didn’t want to tell you everything, because that would be a huge spoiler.

Why where the people so upset about these endings?

Because most of the cinematic were almost the same so there is an extended cut dlc. that added a bit to those cinematic. The main difference is the color of everything that comes out of the citadel.

Why is this the best game if you must tell me in one sentence?

This is my favorite, because I played with it for several hundred hours during my life and it is a really good rpg. and I like sci-fi.

Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm and the Legacy of Void

When I played with Prey 2017 and saw the incredible graphics and a good story I thought about Blizzard. I must write something about a Blizzard game. Starcraft is a game that every decent human being has already played. If you are not one of those people stop reading my blog and start to play it right now. There are no excuses. You can even download the Starcraft one for free Here. After you finished it and sucked up in its world you can advance to Starcraft 2. While I was playing it I wrote down some note that I wanted to definitely include in this post. A few days ago my computer died so there goes my notes. This is definitely the king of all strategy games so who needs notes anyway.

There are three races in Starcraft two the Terrain, Protoss and the Zerg. The Terrain are the humans with advanced war technology. The Protoss are a race who has fewer numbers, but they make up with their supreme technology and the Zerg are the swarm. They are not so strong haven’t got any tech, but can replicate at amazing speeds so you can get overwhelmed by them easily if you are not careful. I know I said that there are three races, but there are actually a few more like the  Xel’Naga, or the purifiers but you should experience them yourself. It is too awesome to just write it down.

3 in 1

Starcraft 2 contains three different campaigns. The first one is the Wings of Liberty. The story continues where Starcraft one ended. If the unimaginable has happened and you don’t want to start with Starcraft one, but want to be up to date with the story line there is a cinematic in the game that summarize it for you traitors. In Wings of Liberty you control the Terrains and help Jim Raynor against Arcturus Mengsk by raising a rebellion. Arcturus was the one who got Sarah Kerrigan killed in Starcraft one, but you already know this. After Wings of Liberty comes the Heart of the Swarm. You control Sarah who has become a human, but not for long. You regain the queen of blades position soon and build a devastating army for vengeance.  The last campaign is the Legacy of Void where you control the Protoss. Artanis brings together the three separate factions of the Protoss agains Amon. Each of the three campaigns has its own unique characteristics. For example when I was playing with Wings of Liberty I could choose that I want to be with the ghost chick or the specter dude. After you choose on of them it affected your next quests. In Heart of the Swarm  and in Legacy of the Void the order you did the quests affected the dialog.

Cinematic and dialog

If you don’t like playing games you can just watch it’s story on YouTube, because it is great for a movie too. Starcraft 2 contains if I have to bet more than 2 hours of cinematic alone! And I didn’t count the in game conversations or between the maps dialog and extra Easter eggs. It has so many of those extras that I am sure you could fill in a book with just those. If you leave the game between missions to have a snack or something, in several occasions there are some conversations with the characters or an event occurs in the background.

Al three campaigns has upgrades as you progress them and all upgrades are totally different.

  • First there is the Terrain. They are called research points and you should try to collect as much as you can. You research Zerg and Protoss technology and after you understand it you can implement them in your army. You can trade them in the armory for advantages like no need for Scv to extract vespane gas or your command center can take over Zerg units for a short period of time etc. If this wasn’t enough you can recruit mercenaries too. They are from your units, but an upgraded version of them.
  • In Heart of the Swarm you upgrade Kerrigan herself and get better abilities when she gain levels. There is also the mutation upgrades and the evolution strains. Mutation upgrades are instantly available when you unlock a certain unit. Evolution strains are unlocked in the evolution missions and you can gain access to them in the evolution pit. There are always two different evolution which you must choose from. This makes the vast amount of units in Starcraft two even more. And the more different units the more different strategies so you are guaranteed to not get bored with the game later.
  • The last one is the Protoss. When you are playing with Protoss you are upgrading the Spear of Adun. It is the last of the great arkships capable of carrying an entire Protoss civilization. Its heart is the solar core and is a miniature synthetic and contained star powered by solarite. You can allocate its power to the various weapons and support systems. With more solarite you can allocate more energy. Before every map you can choose which are the helps you want to gain for that mission. The other upgrades are the unit upgrades. Your war council acts as a unit hub. As you progress through the story more units become available. With every new one you get three different versions of it, because you try to unite three Protoss factions. The Khalai, the Nerazim and the Tal’darim. There is also the Purifiers, but they are an ancient robotic race that the Protoss created. In the war council you can choose before every map which one of the units you want to use. I hope I wrote it down in a way that you can understand it easily or at least feel the complexity and the freedom you get with all of these different evolving systems.

Fun stuff

If these campaigns weren’t enough for you Starcraft main income and the love for it comes from multiplayer. Even in the ancient days before the era of internet playing you could play it with a local network and since a game usually lasted for 40 minutes or even less you could play it almost anytime when you and your friends got to a room with computers in it. There were lots of multiplayer modes and different maps with different unique methods even in Starcraft one. Just to pick one out I remember a map that was modified so you could play Zerg football. You shoot something with mutalisks and tried to reach with it the goal line. Maybe it was fan made I don’t quite remember it now. Nevertheless these mods  are also flourished in Starcraft 2. I don’t play multi ever, but there is one that caught my eye while reading about it. There is the realistic scale mod that changes the size and damage units in order to reflect what they are like in the actual lore. I watched some YouTube videos of it and it is quite hilarious. Speaking of which you should also watch CarbotAnimations Starcraft YouTube channel. It has little cartoon parodies of the game and they are really cool. My friend who showed it to me said that after blizzard noticed it they didn’t sue the creator for infringement instead they backed him up with money so he can improve it. Another thing is just how many people play this game, how huge it really is that in South Korea there are championships of it and the top players are considered national heroes and this is not a joke. The same friend told me that Korea has a football team and they wish was to meet the top Starcraft team because they are their heroes. Even the Korean army had a Starcraft team. Let this sink in while you are still reading this and not playing with it already.

Prey 2017

After Resident Evil VII: Biohazard I got thinking about the graphics. I wanted to play a game with better ones so I Googled Best games of 2017 and that’s how I met with this pearl. The graphics are truly amazing! The weapon details, the landscape everything is looking as it should be. There were some other interesting games there, but no spoilers for the future posts. 🙂

The year is 2032 and you are Dr Yu a scientist. The game starts at your home. You can explore it entirely, check your emails throw your stuff around etc. You have high-tech assistance everything is neat and clean I got the feeling that nothing can go wrong this what I need after the Resident Evil horrors. Then you take a helicopter for a little sightseeing just to feel the game engine killing your Ps4 while delivering eye watering scenery to your mind.

The most part of the story is at Talos 1 space station. One of the rooms tells the history of Transtar. It is like a museum with relics of the past and gives you a great background of the story. You go to a laboratory where they put you through some tests. I really liked that part because you can get the hang of the controls in an exciting environment so even the tutorial is fun to play to the point where there is a damn coffee mug that almost gave me a heart attack!

I won’t go into what happens after that, but keep in mind that the game has 3 totally different endings and they depend of your interactions with the game. I didn’t try all of them, ( i usually go evil) but watched the YouTube videos. The game was long, but I could write the main story to a page. The first part of the game could have used some more npcs. It was a bit lonely walking down the halls with the mimics and no human contact at all so no conversations. Even the corpses where not enough so I felt isolated, but if I think about it is on purpose so the player can dive in the atmosphere.

You enemies comes from the Typhon race. There are mimics and greater mimics that can camouflage themself to look like an ordinary item. I just had to copy the game description for them: ” Mimic working mechanism dimensional state where time passes more slowly shifting back with the appropriate stimulus (e.g. prey)”  When exposed they look like an inky octopus. 🙂

Next comes the infected personnel that also look like the mimic, but bigger.  As you progress with the game you meet with phantoms, telepaths and other tidbits, that have different abilities, but my usual problem with the games nowadays remain. Every enemy looks like the same. The game didn’t have any bosses to fight with you just fight with these octopus like creatures and corrupted machinery.

The weapons are awesome! You standard weapon is a wrench. It has more soul than a knife.  If you use it with the gloo cannon you can destroy nearly anything that the game throws at you.

The gloo cannon spits a cement like foam. It can immobilize, extinguish flames, stop electronic discharges, and when hardened it becomes climable. It is far the most useful weapon in the whole game. I really enjoyed that there weren’t the usual machine gun rocket launcher weapons that most games have.

You can carry, repair, and even create turrets like the eradicator turret. They are your deadly allies. A few placed to a door where there are enemies at the other side could really make a difference.

Of course there are grenades like the nullwave transmitter. If you don’t even play the game please watch a video of it in action. I dropped my jaw. It bends the whole space around it. I though that it will tear a whole in the space-time continuum. 🙂

There is also the weapon huntress bolster. It is a toy, but sometimes it can be useful like when you try to sneak past enemies or shoot at buttons that are unreachable. Of course you can upgrade your weapons to carry more ammo or do more damage and if you don’t need one or already have it you can dismantle it for the spare parts for crafting.

Before I get to crafting I just have to write a few words about the psychoscope. It is like goggles you can mark and scan the nearby enemies with it. It reminded me of pitch black 2. It looks much like the scanners in that movie. You can upgrade it various ways and the graphics how it lock in to targets are superb.

You can dismantle almost anything in the game with recyclers and the corpses give you some spare parts as well. If you get the necropsy skill you can even harvest the aliens organs for spare parts. Recyclers convert your junk into materials and fabricators turn materials into usable items. You can watch as your new item forms.

Besides the ones that I already mentioned there were some other stuff that made this game truly exceptional. While progressing the game you acquire skills that makes you more like the mimics than human. You can even polymorph into small things like them to slip through the cracks. There were times when I began to wonder if I am at the right path or I slipped through somewhere where even the creators didn’t think of.

There are emails about a rpg game and you can even find the room where the workers played it with the character sheets and dungeon master stuff. I love rpgs so this brought back some great memories from my childhood. In this game the quest is fatal fortress and there is an ogre’s keep.

There are several it tasks in the game. You need to hack into computers and locks similar to lock picking in Skyrim. You need to install drivers and restore servers there are quite a lot to do with computers. I felt like Mr Robot. 🙂

Resident Evil VII: Biohazard

I watched all the resident evil movies including the cartoons so I thought here is the time to try this game out. The fear of the walking dead, z nation and the walking dead series are also at a break so let’s have some fun with zombies Milla Jovovich style. After a few minutes of playing the summer heated air turned to deadly cold breeze. There isn’t any connection to the movies at all. There is an umbrella corporation helicopter, but that is it and this shit is scary! You should play this game at high volume and in a darkened room to set the mood. I played it in the living room full lights and low volume, but it still made me scream sometimes. I noticed while playing horror games ( I tried F.E.A.R in the past) they have similar  structures. First I shit my pants and after a few hours you develop a resistance or something, because at the end where I battle with the last boss I only feel the action not the horror. There are DLC to the game that you should also try out. I only watched them on YouTube, but they make the story whole.

It starts with your being the girl and tells the story of how the family becomes insane. Your mother starts spitting bugs your father cuts himself and you just try to survive. Then you are the husband (or maybe boyfriend) who got a letter from the wife saying that she is in trouble and you should help her. Shes in trouble is a huge understatement. 🙂 You set off to a journey to an old wrecked house and things get ugly from there pretty fast. There are two endings for the game both should be tried out, because they are quite different.

Most of the story is played at the haunted house I often thought that this must be the biggest house in America. There is an attic, a basement, hidden tunnel system,  huge yard with a trailer etc. I loved that I am at the same place, but it doesn’t get boring, because I can discover every inch of it. Near the end of the game you go to a boat, but that is the only real trip in it and it is just fine like this.

I recently started watching the texas chainsaw massacre movies I am already at the third one and this game sure looks like the second one to me. Your wife father Jack is the same as the old dude who won the chili contest at the second one ( can’t remember the name). He is far the scariest character in the game with his evil laugh. You try to flee from him through really closed spaces and when he rages he starts to run to you. When I first encountered him I almost gave up on the game saying I am too old for this shit. You meet with the son too playing a friendly game of finger blackjacks. Every time you lose, you lose a finger. He makes a device just for that bless his heart. That part reminded me of the saw movies. When you meet with cute Mia ( your wife) he just pushes a knife through her own hand and then a few minutes later cuts of yours with a chainsaw!Only tha Japanese are so sick that they invent a game like this.

Clues puzzles and items

The clues in the game are rich of fantasy. There are “hidden” doors almost everywhere, and you must play with shadows to unlock some. You can also collect coins and tapes so you can get saved games. A lot of imaginations were implemented in these to not be boring, but they messed it up a little from my perspective. Ok there are really different clues all over the place but they are just laying over there in plain sight and the solution is force-fed to you. There are lots of games where I had to watch videos for the puzzles, because I couldn’t figure them out, well not this one apparently. If you found a spider in a room you are sure to find a picture of it as well so you can play with its shadow. The other thing that annoyed me a bit is the carrying capacity. I tried to progress with the storyline, but I had to get back for my stupid chest every time so I can rearrange the items I want to carry with me. The best item on the whole game is a smart watch that measures the distance from the boss. It just a gadget not so useful, but adds a great deal to the excitement. Also there are notes. It isn’t necessary to read them all, but they make the storyline whole. You can find item pieces for crafting and the healing animation is so funny. I’m dying from blood loss, I try to not to lose my guts on the floor then I pour liquid over my hand and done. Iam good as new.

The game has acceptable graphics, but I am really looking forward to the future where the people are realistic. They look like cartoon figures and that can ruin some of the mood. The fire and the shadows are good, but not impressive. By the way a horror game shouldn’t be played for the graphics I know, but one can hope. 🙂 You can play this game on Pc, Xbox, and Ps as well so whichever you have you aren’t left out.

Remembering Heroes III + Horn of the Abyss

This is going to be a short post, but I must let you know what I found recently. I was drinking with my buddies in the weekend. An interesting topic came up. Who have played heroes 3 in the old ages. I grew up on it, besides baldurs gate, heroes was my most favorite game in the world for decades. I played all version except for Heroes of Might and Magic VII, but that is also on my to-do list. One of my friends thought that he was a pro playing it and we started to bring up memories.

Strategy tips

Maps sizes: Different map sizes require different tactics. At a small map for example if you play with dungeon, with a bit of luck you can rush everything down in 2 weeks. How? If you play by yourself on impossible difficulty you choose a starting hero like Arlach. He has a ballista which is a huge advantage at the start. Now comes the trick. You have to restart the scenario until the tavern has Shakti. He is the one with the trogolytes. Now you have trogolytes: arlach (30-40)+ shakti (30-40+30-40+30-40)+ town building 14(or maybe 7 I don’t remember) so you could own up to 174 trogolytes+ a ballista at the second day.(you need money, but small maps has some in the vicinity of the town. They rip apart everything. On bigger maps you definitely need a hero with logistics skill or a skill of the overpowered ones. For necropolis it is Thant with the animate dead. You can play with it so you don’t lose a single one of your creatures the whole game! For the other towns there are a few with armorer skill as special starting skill like Neela or Mephala. After you reach several levels you slowly becoming almost indestructible with it. As for magic try to reach for earth magic, because once you get town portal at an expert level you shouldn’t lose. There are tons of great strategies, but the best part of it to create your own.

Horn of the Abyss

When I got home I got heroes 3 again and find out that it has an unofficial expansion. Most of the times I hate mods and anything that is not official. They are buggy and kill the gaming experience etc. but this was a great exception. You can download it for free. They added tons of new stuff to the game. New music, new monsters, a new town with its own creatures called the cove. It is a pirate themed town and I enjoyed trying it out a lot. I didn’t want to play again with heroes 3, because I did everything in it the good old days, but this way I got a new experience with brand new maps and a plot that I just had to share it with you. So if you loved this game you should give it a try for a few days for the retro feeling.

Middle earth Shadow of Mordor

I know that it isn’t a new game but when I choose Middle earth shadow of war I saw that it has a predecessor and I loved the lord of the rings movies even the Hobbit so I had no choice, but to try this as well for the story. 🙂

You start at a peaceful place training with your son and BAM you’re in the middle of mordor fighting some orks. The storyline hit me so fast and got serious that I didn’t really manage to know what the hell was going on. You and a wraith are attached and you search for your memories together to fill out the missing pieces from your pasts like a puzzle. There is an 32 piece ithildin symbol that you can collect and it forms a door. Don’t do it… It doesn’t do anything. I know if I love the lore I enjoy it and the voice actor is awesome, but damn they could have at least give a little buff to something. There are several flashbacks and some of them really give you the goosebumps. I really loved the authentic style lots of occasions you and the npcs speak elven or orkish. After you start the game there you are with countless of options, there are artifacts, missions, collectibles and whole bunch of stuff so I tried to clear areas one by one. The most annoying thing is that if you are on a mission and get too far away in the heat of battle you die instantly. It was so irritating at first that I almost gave up on the game. On the one side it’s great that there are a bunch of side quests where you can get upgrades and runes and stuff, but on the other it messed a bit with the story on my perspective. Pretty soon I met with Gollam and I was overjoyed because he is one of the main reasons I started playing this game. After several free the slaves quests ( every slave looks basically the same) I totally forgot what happened to him. There was another funny dude called ratbag. He is an ork who helps you, but to tell you the truth somewhere along the way he is vanished too. There is also dwarf hunter ( a dwarf who hunts not a hunter who hunts dwarves) that you have several quests together. I thought that the storyline is going to be quite short, because of the quick beginning, but man I was wrong. It is great and worth playing. I don’t want to spoiler anything but they did a cliffhanger at the end so I have to play with shadow of war as soon as I finished this article.

Since you are a half wraith and a half ranger you have abilities from both sides. I wanted to max out just the wraith side, because that is for ranged attacks and supernatural talents like heat vision and domination so I liked it better at first, but you can’t. The domination becomes a critical part of the gameplay, because after some time you can dominate almost anything. You have to spend points for both of your ability tree to unlock the better ones. Your character has 3 weapons. A sword a dagger which is a sword, but you broke it and a bow. When you kill enemies they drop runes. You can use them to upgrade the weapons. When you have a bunch of runes on them they look so awesome. Of course there is headshot with the arrow, but you can also pin enemies with it. It is a pretty useful tool when an enemy with intel that you need is running away from you. While playing the game your character becomes a killing machine. There are executions and brutalize with tons of blood. I didn’t expect so detailed finishing moves and so much thought in every slash, throw, cutting, gutting from a 2014 game. The choreography of the combat is exceptional and I think that is the main reason that so many players got hooked on this game. When I flee while jumping over enemies behind me a cloud of flying tomahawks and poison spears can really get the blood boiling. I used to play Ryse son of Rome on my Xbox it had similar graphics, with good combat, but middle earth combat system tops it.

Over 80% of the time I was at grassy places assaulting walls or wooden buildings. I had hoped that there will be dozens of mines and hills, but not. There was a vulcan with next generation ashes falling from it at the end, but the scenery didn’t take away my breath. Interacting with it is another thing.  There are bee hives that you can disturb to attack the enemy, there are barrels that explode, you can eat every damn mushroom and root for health, and there are fireplaces that can also explode causing massive fire damage to the living at their vicinity. These assets can really turn the tide when you are in a combat. It gives you the option to make great strategies not just hack and slash and hoping for the best.

How should I start this. This was a great disappointment for me while I have to admit that this game has one of the most thought out enemy systems that I have ever played before. I start with the bad side. I am the frigging middle earth where should be dragons, demons, ents, spiders, trolls, and a whole bunch of other monsters and there isn’t any. I only fought with ghuls, orks and uruks, sometimes caragors and maybe 3 grugs. Somebody tell me why?! I really hope that the next one will be different in this. If I set this aside the orks and uruks are extensive. The enemy have a nemezis ranking tree. They got footsoldiers captains, warchiefs. When an enemy kills you it gets promoted and they power also raised. They have names and memories so when you encounter one more than once he remembers your previous one and talk to you accordingly. With the domination skill it is awesome as you infiltrate their ranks one by one and climb their political ladder. They also have their unique faces and skills that make them different enemies, but in my eyes they are all orks with the same size and same number of hands and claws. You need to gather intel from enemies to know those skills because it can be quite disturbing when you start to shoot one in the middle of a group and after they noticed you realize that it has an immunity to ranged weapons. Next to the ranking system they have classes too like Berserkers, shielded ones, and ranged types. When you don’t interact with them the time doesn’t stops. So every enemy is doing their own tasks everywhere. There are turf wars and such and everyone is looking for power. If you see an enemy more than once there is a possibility that he received a higher rank since you last saw him. This what makes me forget the bad side that I mentioned earlier. Oh and the most important part. When you aren’t strong enough not just attack everything you see because those nasty ork fuckers like to call for reinforcements in populated areas and you get overwhelmed quite soon. I learned this the hard way.

There are four type of quests. The bow quests, the dagger quests, the sword quests, and the outcast quests. They involve free the slaves, stealth, ranged practice and the usual quests that these kind of games have. I have to highlight the defeat the warrior horde and the bridge crossing missions. They were far the best for me. The bridge crossing is a tower defense type when the horde is coming and you have to defend something. Great massacres there.. One of the defeat the horde missions there was a bonus objective to gain a 100 hit combo!! My average hits were around 12 at that time so you can imagine my war cry while knee-deep carving and slicing the scum.

I feel I left out a whole bunch of stuff and haven’t explained so many things but I could write a book about it and that itself says a lot about the game. I’m looking forward to write about the next one (shadow of war) and I will try to include some of the stuff that has been left out from here. CRAP SHADOW OF WAR IS ONLY AT A PRE-ORDER STATUS!  At least I give a link for it too.

Update! Here is the link for the Shadow of War: Middle earth Shadow of War

Titanfall 2

I haven’t really played with Titanfall 1, but my friends strongly suggested that I tried out this one, because of the unique things that it has and the storyline. I told them that I am not the multiplayer kind however they convinced me to play the single player campaign. It got me hooked almost instantly. The last fps game was half-life that I played hmm maybe I will make a blog post for it in the future if I don’t forget.

The first thing I noticed is the nature meet metal looks of the first maps when you put big ass machines in a grassy wild area with strange wild animals in it. It kind of reminded me of the movie avatar.  Later in the game there are caverns and other landscapes that with breathtaking graphic that strengthened my suspicion. There are 4-5 elements that can hurt or kill you not just the enemies. There is heat, cold, hazardous waste, electrical discharge and there are maps that you can fall out in space.

The storyline was good, but a bit short for me. I could do it with a few sittings. You are a little soldier/pilot with some big guns trying to kill the suckers that gets in your way and then when you get the titan from the captain you transform into a huge badass tank with this heavy ass artillery. I don’t want to spoiler anything, but there is one part that I must write about and that is the timerift. I don’t know if they implemented it in the multiplayer game also, but if they had somehow then I should definitely try it just for this. First you get some flashbacks then find a glove that can switch between two timelines. Basically you are walking on two different levels at the same time and whenever you want you can switch to the other one. I got myself into some jumpscare in that part. Walking on the brink of fire I switched and a swat team was waiting for me on the other side with their guns on my face. Started switching back and forth while constantly reloading my gun and screaming/swearing constantly about the soldiers, the fire and my bowel movements. It was epic!

Your titan has 6 types you can choose from and you change it when you want during the game. You can create a field with it that can bounces back the missiles fired at you so it is not just an average shield. Then there is the multi target missile system lock on. On your left shoulder a missile launcher appears you can see when it locks the targets one by one and with one fire several missiles flood the area each of them directed to an enemy. I saw something similar in the iron man movies. I think in the first one when Robert Downey Jr. disarms a group of people with only one shot from his left side. If this wasn’t enough each titans have different cores. They have energy levels and when they are full you can discharge them with devastating effects. They do incredible damage in a short amount of time, but you must see it with yourself to feel what I am talking about. More than once I was at the brink of death when bang the core got full and everybody got their asses handed to them.

The other part when I first made encounter with the ticks in the game. They are the only enemies that are worth mentioning besides the animals, and the samurai robot. I overheard a message that said scan the area drop the ticks or something like that. Guessed that they would be some kind of a scouting gadget or something. Well they are sure as hell not! When they killed me the third time I got so pissed that I thought I am going to stop this game altogether. The only thing that kept me going that my friend said be cool in later of the game you can have your very own ticks.
